Since opening its doors in 1968, Thomas Nelson Community College has been responsive to the educational and cultural needs of the Virginia Peninsula. The Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium, dedicated in 2003, brings to the community an exciting new venue for performing arts, lectures, films, symposia and other kinds of professional events. The 470 seat facility boasts of state-of-the-art performance technology and is conveniently located on TNCC’s Hampton campus just 30 minutes away from Williamsburg and the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.
The auditorium lobby features a multi-story public space that serves as a reception venue and gathering area. Also, the second floor lobby houses reception areas with views of the campus.
The auditorium was designed for easy physical accessibility to both the adjacent parking area and the inner auditorium. Decorated in elegant cherry wood, the auditorium has near perfect acoustics.

 About Dr. Mary T. Christian
The auditorium was named in honor of Dr. Mary T. Christian, an educator, delegate and leader, who is a premier role model for our community. Born and raised in Hampton, Virginia, Dr. Christian was one of five children in a household where money was scarce but the value of education was instilled.
She began her academic career at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), where she later returned as Director of the School of Education, rising to Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education before retiring as professor emeritus.
In 1985, Dr. Christian was the first African American and first female from Hampton to be elected to the state legislature, post Reconstruction. She went on to serve nine consecutive terms representing Virginia’s 92 House District.
