It is our desire to make your stay at Thomas Nelson Community College an enriching and rewarding experience. To ensure that you are as successful as possible in your coursework, TNCC administers a Student Assessment and Placement Program to determine your readiness for college level work.

Assessment may be satisfied by appropriate SAT or ACT tests, previous college coursework as shown on a college transcript, selected advanced placement tests or the academic placement test battery described in this brochure. Academic placement tests are administered by the Testing Center, in accordance with college’s assessment and placement policy guidelines. The results of this assessment will be used by the college counselors to determine whether you have the required academic ability to be admitted to the college and to decide placement into appropriate courses.

There is no reason to be nervous about taking the tests. They are designed to determine your present level of functioning in math, reading and writing. You are encouraged to do the best you can on the tests in order to be placed in classes where you will be challenged to succeed.

Students must obtain an Applicant Information Form from the Office of Admissions, 201 Griffin Hall (Hampton Campus) or Suite 117 (Historic Triangle Campus). The form will indicate the placement test(s) that the student is required to take based on a pre-screening process implemented by Admissions Office personnel.

Placement tests are offered on a walk-in basis according to the following schedule:

Peak Schedule: August 22 - August 29, 2009

  • Monday thru Thursday……………..................8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Friday …………………………………………8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Saturday ……………………………………….8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Standard Schedule: August 31, 2009 until the next Peak Registration Period (TBD)

  • Monday & Thursday ………………….8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday …………8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The placement tests are generally administered in Room 209 Griffin Hall (Hampton Campus) or suite 117 (Historic Triangle Campus). If alternate locations are necessary you will be notified.

COMPASS is a computerized test with no time limit. How long the test takes depends on how consistent you are in answering the test items and how much time you take to answer the questions. Typically students take 1½ - 2 ½ hours to complete the full test battery.

You are responsible for being prepared to test. That includes feeling well, having glasses (if needed), allowing adequate time, and testing in a serious manner. You will not be allowed to retest because of lack of preparation.

What Should Students Bring with Them to the Test?

All you will need for the testing session is a picture I.D. for identification purposes and two number 2 pencils. All other materials will be provided. A window calculator is provided. However, if you wish to bring your own, please see the guidelines as to which calculators are allowed. Please be reminded that the college is unable to provide babysitting services and cannot be responsible for children left unattended.

Description of the Placement Tests

Three different computerized tests may be administered: reading, writing and mathematics. The computer will give you instructions and practice exercises for each test area.
