At TNCC we take academic advising very seriously. We have many individuals on staff, from faculty members to professional counselors, to assist you during your academic career. There are three primary locations on campus where academic advising takes place: the Admissions and Welcome Center, the Office of Student Development and the Advising Area.

As a new student, you will initially work with professional counselors in the Admissions and Welcome Center, located in Griffin Hall room 201. These counselors provide new students with academic advising services. Counselors review placement scores and previous high school and/or college academic records, provide information about procedures, admissions requirements, and prerequisites. They provide information about majors and programs of study, as well as, assist with initial course selection and major declaration. Additionally, they refer students to Financial Aid, Career Planning, and Disability Services as needed.

It is important to note that throughout their academic career at TNCC, continuing students have access to counselors in the Admissions and Welcome Center, located in Griffin Hall room 201 and the Office of Student Development, located in Hastings Hall, room 323. These counselors assist students with career planning and course selection, as well as, personal concerns.

Finally, for the continuing student, the Advising Area is staffed with professional counselors and faculty on a periodic basis to provide academic advising help. The Area is open on a temporary basis before each semester begins, For a schedule of days and hours the center is open, consult the Calendar of Events located at www.tncc.edu. Information regarding advising days and times are also posted outside of Hastings Hall, room 324 where the Advising Area is located or email AdvisingHelp@TNCC.edu.

Students may see a faculty advisor or professional counselor to obtain a program of study audit sheet, get advice on course selection and change their major. Additionally, they may have their course work reviewed and receive information regarding transferring to a four-year institution. The Center is equipped with printed materials and laptop computers to assist students with any questions they have regarding their major or transferring. Students may view articulation agreements in the Advising Area, but to obtain an actual articulation agreement, they must go to the Academic Planning & Transfer Center, located in Griffin Hall, room 201 in the Admissions and Welcome Center.

For additional information about Declaring/Changing a Major or about Self-Advising, please see the Advising FAQ’s page. For additional information about transferring see the VCCS Transfer Guide.
