BOOKS

- At
Issue (call numbers vary) Each title focuses on a
different topic. Uses a pro-con format and provides in-depth discussions
by leading advocates of each perspective. Includes footnotes and source
references. Examples: Affirmative action, Cloning, Domestic violence, Gay
marriage, Militia movement.
- The
Churches Speak Series REF HN35.C4. Each book represents a specific
issue and contains official statements from religious bodies and ecumenical
organizations on the topic. Examples: Abortion, Euthanasia, Homosexuality,
Women's ordination.
- Contemporary
World Issues (call numbers vary) Each book deals with a single topic
and contains a chronology, biographies, relevant statistics, a directory
of organizations and a bibliography. Examples: Animal rights, Domestic
violence, Gay and Lesbian Rights, Rape.
- Current
Controversies (call numbers vary) Excerpts from articles,
newspapers and books are used to present authoritative opinions on issues
of national and international interest in a pro/con format. A short bibliography
and a list of organizations are included. Examples: Abortion, AIDS, Family
violence, Gun Control, Hate Crimes, Pollution, Women in the Military.
- Opposing
Viewpoints (call numbers vary) Each title focuses
on a different topic and explores the issues using expert opinions from
contemporary and historical authors in a pro/con format. Contains bibliographies,
list of relevant organizations, glossaries, and chronologies. Examples:
Adoption, Censorship, Death penalty, Euthanasia, Gun Control. Also
available online, see below.
- Reference
Shelf (call numbers vary) Each book excerpts or reprints important
articles on a contemporary social issue. Included are background information,
discussions from various points of view, and a bibliography. Examples:
Affirmative action, American education, Banking scandals, Censorship, English-Official
Language, Suicide, United Nations.
- Taking
Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues (call numbers vary) Adjacent
pro and con arguments excerpted from journal articles and books are written
by experts and focus on diverse topics surrounding a broad issue area.
Examples: Israel, Bioethical Issues, American History, Mass Media, Race
and Ethnicity, Psychological Issues.
PERIODICAL AND NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
- CQ Researcher -
(formerly Editorial Research Reports) Each issue focuses on a specific topic
presenting alternative views and a bibliography.
- Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center- draws on print based Opposing Viewpoints by Greenhaven Press. Covers hot social issues such as terrorism, stem cell research, and gun control with topic overviews and pro/con articles. This is listed below under internet resources.
- Issues and Controversies (Facts on File)- offers articles on hot topics in business, politics, government, education, and popular culture.

- Almanac of Policy Issues -
Neutral backgrounders on many controversial issues (death penalty, campaign
finance reform, abortion, etc.), including links to news, articles, directories,
and associations on either side of the issue.
- Documents in
the News: Current Events Research - identifies issues about government
making news headlines and web sources with additional information.
- Public Agenda Online - Public
debates on hot topics offering various views, pro and con.
- Issues pages at Speakout.com showcases
leading research, opinions and events shaping public policy on dozens of
issues including education, technology and healthcare.
- Hot Paper
Topics - Lists of research paper resources from St. Ambrose University.
- Hot
Topics Supersites - a directory of resources for controversial topics
of current interest, put together the by San Diego State University library.
- ProCon.org - a nonpartisan nonprofit that presents controversial issues in a straight forward pro-con format. Mission is to promote education, critical thinking, and informed citizenship.
- Rand Corporation – a nonprofit institution that addresses the challenges facing the public and private sectors around the world. Their website contains research and hot topics.
