Tech Prep Career Pathways are operated in partnership with the Greater Peninsula Career Pathways Consortium. The purpose of the Consortium is to tie business to education, connect students to local and regional industries, promote learning opportunities and work-related experiences for K-12 students, coordinate data collection and assessments with respect to workforce skill development, and collaborate in the annual development and review of the Tech Prep grant.

In addition, the Consortium generates and shares ideas to support economic development of the Greater Virginia Peninsula to identify clear career paths through post-secondary training and education, work-based learning and recruitment strategies, job-shadowing, mentoring programs, cooperative learning, and internship opportunities

What are Career Pathways?

Career Pathways are a comprehensive program that provide a seamless transition for students from secondary to postsecondary education and the skilled workforce, and that position students for high wage, high demand, and/or high skill careers. A Career Pathway is a coherent sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical education (CTE) courses commencing in the secondary school and leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree and beyond, to industry-recognized certification, and/or to nationally or state-recognized licensure. Career Pathways are developed, implemented, and maintained by partnerships of secondary and postsecondary education, business, and employers.

What is a Tech Prep Career Pathway?

Tech Prep Career Pathways integrates two years of career-technical high school courses with a two-year technical program at the community college. The program provides for the transfer of designated high school courses (articulated courses) to Thomas Nelson Community College. Tech Prep articulated college credits (not available after September 30, 2010) ensure that students do not repeat courses in college that they completed in high school. Through Tech Prep students can also save money and time in earning a college degree (not available after September 30, 2010). Tech Prep Career Pathways provide coherent sequences of rigorous academic and career-technical courses. These courses begin in high school, continue in college, and lead to an Associate's or Baccalaureate Degree, an industry-recognized certificate, and/or a license.
