What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment is a program that allows high school students to earn college and high school credit concurrently. This credit may support a post secondary diploma, certificate, or degree at a Virginia public institution and may also be applied to a high school diploma.

Important Information

What Is In-School Dual Enrollment?

In-School Dual Enrollment is offered by TNCC in partnership with Hampton City Schools, Newport News Public Schools, Poquoson City Schools, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools, the York County School Division, New Horizons Governor’s School, New Horizons Career-Technical Program, Denbigh Baptist Christian School, and Hampton Christian High School. Through In-School Dual Enrollment, eligible high school students can earn both college credit and high school credit for approved courses taken in their home high schools. Tuition for In-School Dual Enrollment is very affordable, and some school divisions cover tuition for their students. Upon completion of dual enrollment courses, students are eligible to receive TNCC transcripts.

What Is On-Campus Dual Enrollment?

On-Campus Dual Enrollment allows high school students to take college credit courses on the TNCC campus. Students (including home-schooled students and students from other service areas) may dual enroll on-campus if they meet college prerequisites/requirements. Tuition for On-Campus Dual Enrollment is the full TNCC tuition rate. Local school divisions determine whether students may also earn high school credit for On-Campus Dual Enrollment courses

Benefits to Students:

  • High school credit and college credit are earned at the same time.
  • College credit is transferable to most Virginia colleges and to other public colleges and universities.
  • Dual enrollment entitles students access to TNCC campus resources.
  • Dual enrollment courses taught in the high school offer the same high academic standards found in courses on the TNCC campus.
  • Dual enrollment can save time and tuition, providing affordable college credit for high school students.

Student Eligibility:

  • Students in a Virginia public or private secondary school or in a home school program may be eligible for dual enrollment.
  • Students must have parental and high school principal permission to register for dual enrollment courses.
  • Students must meet admissions criteria and prerequisites established by the post secondary institution.

What In-School Dual Enrollment Courses Are Available?

Students interested in In-School Dual Enrollment should talk with their high school counselors and teachers about dual enrollment opportunities in their high school.

What Will It Cost?

Thomas Nelson Community College tuition is very affordable. Local school divisions receive a discounted rate for dual enrollment courses that are taught in the high school. See your high school guidance counselor for the current tuition rate and payment procedures.
