Why not go to school and challenge myself, broaden and sharpen my mind and make new connections.

Christopher Payne is contemplating joining the United States Army or Air Force. But he wants to complete college first. Payne saw Thomas Nelson Community College as the best option and enrolled in 2013. “Why not go to school and challenge myself, broaden and sharpen my mind and make new connections,” said the business administration major.

Serving as a co-captain of Thomas Nelson’s basketball team allows the power forward to hone his leadership skills. He is on a quest this season to capture a consecutive state championship.

Payne is also a peer mentor in a new program at the College called MERIT. It aims to help young men stay enrolled and graduate among other objectives.

Payne splits his time between classes, basketball, volunteering at a local elementary school and working a part-time job. He makes it work because he wants to make a positive impact. “I’m striving to be a great man. I want to make a big difference in not only my community, not only in my state but around the world if that’s possible,” he said.
