WHAT IS THE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM?

Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded TRIO grant program designed to provide supportive academic and personal services to a select number of eligible students at Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC). Students who meet the federal eligibility criteria and have the potential for achieving a college degree but need a support system in order to achieve this goal, are chosen for the program.

WHAT WILL STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES DO FOR ME WHILE IN COLLEGE?

Student Support Services was instituted at TNCC in an effort to give eligible students a better chance of success during their stay in college. The aim is to provide each participating student with support services ranging from study skills development and tutoring to personal counseling. The goal is to identify the needs of each student and then build a customized educational plan of assistance accordingly.

WHAT SERVICES DOES THE TNCC STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM PROVIDE?

  • Assessment targeting learning styles, study skills, personality type, and career path
  • Personal assistance with your academic program, career exploration, and individual concerns
  • Counseling services and if appropriate, referral to outside agencies
  • Assistance with understanding financial aid and scholarship processes
  • Individual and group tutoring
  • Academic and personal success workshops
  • Transfer assistance and four-year college visits
  • Cultural enrichment activities - plays, museums, speakers, etc.

WHAT WILL STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES COST ME?

There are no fees for services received from the SSS program. The program offers free academic and personal counseling services, tutoring and cultural enrichment*. However, the program will cost you your time, interest, and a commitment to fulfill your obligations as a Student Support Services participant (participation requirements).

*At times, there are fees associated with optional cultural enrichment activities sponsored by the program.

HOW CAN I BECOME A STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PARTICIPANT?

  1. Student must be enrolled in six or more credit hours during the day at the Hampton campus.
  2. Students must take at least half of their classes in a traditional classroom setting.
  3. Any student enrolled or accepted for enrollment at TNCC who is a citizen or national of the U.S. or meets residency requirements for federal student financial aid AND meets ONE of the following requirements meets with the SSS program counselor or director to apply for admission:
    • First generation college student (neither parent/guardian graduated from a 4-year college)
    • Qualifying taxable income (variable standard set annually by the federal government)
    • Individual with a documented disability

HOW DO I PARTICIPATE IN THE STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM?

  • Meet with the SSS counselor and/or director for information and assistance in establishing an Educational Success Plan (ESP), career planning, personal counseling, tutoring and preparing for four year college transfer
  • Participate in various Student Support Services activities/services that meet your needs.
  • Meet with the program counselor or director a minimum of three times a semester.
